Cultural & Religious Circumcision for Boys Aged 6+ & Adults | Melbourne

🩺 Important Clinical Note

Dr Rahul Tipnis provides professional minor surgical procedures exclusively for children aged 6 years and older, adolescents, and adult men. We do not perform infant or newborn circumcisions. Every procedure requires a mandatory clinical assessment prior to surgical confirmation to ensure medical eligibility.

Professional Care for Our Communities

We recognize that circumcision holds profound cultural identity, traditional significance, and spiritual importance for many diverse communities across Victoria.

Dr Rahul Tipnis (FRACGP) delivers a highly professional, respectful, and clinically sterile day-surgery environment for families seeking elective traditional procedures for boys aged 6 years and older, adolescents, and adults.

Dedicated Cultural Community Pathways:

Our clinic regularly supports, respects, and welcomes individuals from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds, ensuring traditional milestones are managed under strict modern clinical safety standards:

  • Islamic Communities: Providing clean, clinically monitored procedures for families honoring Sunnah traditions for older boys (6+) and adult reverts.

  • Filipino Communities: Offering modern surgical alternatives for families seeking traditional adolescent Tuli transitions.

  • Southeast Asian, African, and Pacific Islander Communities: Ensuring traditional lifecycle transitions are managed safely under modern Australian general practice frameworks.

🎓 National Medical Educator

All minor surgeries are managed by an audited practitioner recognized by the broader medical community. Dr Rahul Tipnis is a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP) with over 25 years of experience. He serves as a Senior Clinical Educator for HealthCert Education, where he is responsible for writing national medical curricula and training other general practitioners across Australia in advanced surgical circumcision techniques.

Surgical Options Aligned by Age Thresholds:

To maintain patient safety and align with standardized day-surgery protocols, we utilize distinct, modern methods depending on the patient's age:

  • Ages 6 to 14 Years (The Plastibell Method): A highly proven, stitch-free surgical method well-suited for school-aged children. A specialized protective ring is placed over the glans, and the ring naturally drops away on its own within several days, simplifying home healing care and reducing immediate post-operative bleeding risks.

  • Ages 14 Years to Adults (The ZSR Stapler Circumcision Technique): A modern, automated device used under targeted local numbing blocks. It simultaneously performs a clean, uniform trim and deploys tiny, self-dissolving alignment staples, greatly reducing operative times and eliminating the need for post-op stitch removals.

  • Wyndham Clinic Private Hospital Options: While many procedures are conducted smoothly in-clinic under local anesthetic, we offer optional light sedation at an external hospital facility for younger children or highly anxious patients when clinically appropriate.

The Process for Families

  1. Book directly – no referral required. Telehealth available for regional families.

  2. Mandatory clinical consultation to assess suitability and discuss risks/aftercare.

  3. Procedure performed safely in a clinic or hospital setting.

  4. Recovery: Most boys return to school within 3–5 days. Full healing usually occurs within 4–6 weeks.

FAQ

1. At what age can my child have a cultural or religious circumcision?

We provide circumcision services for children aged 6 years and above. To ensure patient safety and optimal recovery, we do not perform the procedure on infants or children under 6. For patients aged 6 to 14, we typically utilize the Plastibell method, while the ZSR Stapler Circumcision technique is generally used for those aged 14 and older.

2. Do you provide circumcision for the Muslim community (Sunnah)?

Yes. We provide clinical circumcision services for Muslim families seeking Sunnah circumcision. The procedure is performed in a sterile, medical environment by experienced medical practitioners who respect the cultural significance of the practice.

3. Do you offer Tuli procedures for Filipino families?

Yes. We offer clinical Tuli procedures for Filipino and Southeast Asian families. Our clinic uses modern surgical techniques in a professional medical setting, ensuring that the procedure is performed with proper clinical oversight and comprehensive aftercare support.

4. Is cultural or religious circumcision covered by Medicare?

No. Circumcisions performed for cultural, religious, or personal reasons are classified as elective procedures. As they are not performed for a documented medical condition (such as phimosis), they are private fee services and do not attract a Medicare rebate.

5. Is a GP referral required for these procedures?

No referral is necessary. Families can book a consultation directly with our clinic. During this initial appointment, the doctor will assess the patient and discuss the procedure, risks, and recovery process.

6. Where is the circumcision procedure performed?

Most procedures are conducted at our primary clinic in Hoppers Crossing. If a patient—particularly a child or an anxious adult—is assessed as requiring sedation, the procedure will be scheduled at Wyndham Clinic Private Hospital for enhanced comfort and safety

7. What is the difference between a medical and cultural circumcision at your clinic?

The surgical technique itself is identical and performed to the same rigorous clinical standards. The primary difference lies in the diagnosis and financial structure. A medical circumcision treats a physical pathology (like BXO or phimosis) and may attract a Medicare rebate. A cultural or religious circumcision is an elective procedure chosen for traditional reasons, meaning it does not qualify for Medicare and is handled entirely as a transparent private fee
