Choosing a permanent birth control method is a major decision for any man or couple. For many, the idea of undergoing a surgical procedure—even a minor one—can trigger a fair amount of nervousness. A lot of that anxiety simply comes from not knowing what actually happens behind the clinic doors.

Here is a step-by-step walkthrough of what happens during your 30-minute in-clinic appointment at our Hoppers Crossing medical centre.

Step 1: Arrival & Pre-Procedure Check (5 Minutes)

When you arrive for your scheduled appointment, our clinical team will welcome you and ensure all pre-procedure documentation is complete.

Clinical Briefing: You will sit down with Dr. Rahul Tipnis to review your medical history, confirm that you have read and understood the consent details, and answer any last-minute questions.
Comfort Check: We make sure you are relaxed and ready. You do not need to fast before a no-scalpel vasectomy; in fact, having a light meal and staying well-hydrated before coming in helps prevent lightheadedness.

Step 2: Preparation & Local Anaesthetic (5 Minutes)

Once inside the procedure room, you will be asked to lie comfortably on your back on the examination table.

Hygiene & Sterile Setup: The surgical area is cleaned with an antiseptic solution and framed with sterile drapes.
Targeted Numbing: We use a specialized local anaesthetic technique. Dr. Tipnis administers local anaesthetic directly to the vas deferens tubes using a tiny needle. You may feel a brief pinch or light sting lasting only a few seconds, after which the entire area becomes completely numb.

Step 3: The No-Scalpel Procedure (10–15 Minutes)

Unlike traditional surgical vasectomies that require skin incisions with a scalpel, the no-scalpel technique uses purpose-built instrument tools.

A Tiny Opening: Rather than cutting the skin, Dr. Tipnis uses a delicate instruments to make a single, tiny puncture hole (usually less than 2–3 millimeters) in the front skin of the scrotum.
Accessing the Vas Deferens: Through this tiny opening, the vas deferens tubes (which carry sperm from the testicles) are gently brought to the surface one at a time.
Dividing & Sealing: Each tube is divided, and the ends are carefully cauterized (sealed) and tied to ensure long-term permanent occlusion.
No Stitches Required: Because the opening is a tiny puncture rather than a surgical cut, it contracts naturally and heals smoothly on its own—no stitches or sutures are needed.

Throughout the 15-minute procedure, you are fully awake, relaxed, and able to chat with Dr. Tipnis or listen to background music. Most men report feeling a mild pulling or pressure sensation, but no sharp pain.

Step 4: Post-Op Care & Heading Home (5 Minutes)

As soon as the procedure is finished, a small protective dressing is applied over the puncture site.

Post-Procedure Instructions: We provide clear, written aftercare guidelines covering pain management, wearing supportive underwear, and managing activities over the next few days.
No Waiting Around: Because no general sedation or heavy medication is used, you can stand up, get dressed, and walk out of the clinic shortly after the appointment. While many men choose to drive themselves home, having someone accompany you or arrange a ride is always a great option for extra comfort.

Don't Forget: The 16-Week Sperm Check

A vasectomy is not immediately effective. Sperm that were already stored upstream in the tubes before the procedure take time to clear out.

You must continue using backup birth control until you undergo a Post-Vasectomy Semen Analysis (PVSA) at 12 weeks post-procedure (or after a minimum of 20 ejaculations).
Once our laboratory analysis confirms zero active sperm, you will receive written confirmation that it is safe to discontinue other contraception.
